UAAP football finals: Tams, Tigresses forge KO matches

MANILA, Philippines—Far Eastern University and University of Santo Tomas forced winner-take-all duels for the 72nd UAAP football titles after posting narrow victories over the top-seeded teams Thursday at Ateneo’s Erenchun field in Quezon City.
Former RP team ace Jason Cordova, playing in his final season for FEU, struck in the 22nd minute to lift the Tamaraws to a 1-0 triumph over elimination-round topnotcher UST in the men’s finals.
But the 5-foot-11 Cordova, who has been thrust into an attacking role after playing central defense in his early years at FEU, had a bittersweet ending to his collegiate career after he was sent off in the second half for hitting Shinmar Felongco, forcing him out of the rubber match in the Sunday.
Earlier, the Tigresses kept their bid for back-to-back titles alive by nipping De La Salle University, 2-0, in the women’s division.
Sophomore striker Marianne Narciso scored all the goals for the Tigresses, who are looking to duplicate their feat last year when they also overcame the Lady Archers’ twice-to-beat edge.
The odds will be stacked against the Tamaraws on Sunday with two other key players—Romnick Jover and Joshua Almenar—sitting out the match due to suspension after they collected their second yellow cards for the tournament Thursday.
