Diego Sanchez Wins in UFC

Diego Sanchez Wins in UFC - That's because "The Hitman" was in a virtual nightmare when the cageside judges awarded a unanimous decision win to "The Dream" following their welterweight headliner at the UFC on Versus 3 event earlier tonight (March 3) from the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Dane looked "great" early on, lighting Sanchez up with a patient striking attack and superb takedown defense. The former lightweight battled back towards the end of round two, but despite a late flurry, seemed to be much worse for the wear.

In fact, by the end of the fight, he looked like an extra from the Albuquerque Chainsaw Massacre, sporting a purple grapefruit under both eyes and drooling blood.

But it was likely his trademark aggression and third round blitzkrieg that convinced the judges he won the fight. And judging by the amount of boo-birds in attendance, not everyone was happy with the decision.

Star-divide

That includes Kampmann, who looked visibly distraught in his post-fight comments with color commentator Joe Rogan. Did his fading gas tank and hit-and-run offense cost him the fight?

Either way, Sanchez looks to have made good on his promise to remain in the welterweight division and deliver exciting fights. It will be interesting to see how the promotion matches him up in is next outing.

Diego Sanchez was bruised and bloodied in a close fight with Martin Kampmann, but he ended up pulling out the unanimous decision win at UFC on Versus 3: Sanchez vs. Kampmann.

After getting rocked by a strong shot in the first round, Sanchez recovered and turned up the pace in the remaining two rounds to get the win.

Martin Kampmann pushes the action against Diego Sanchez

Sanchez came out with the typical mean scowl and Kampmann worked the jab early. Sanchez worked to get a takedown, but Kampmann kept the fight standing. A ferocious straight right by Kampmann dropped Sanchez at just under two minutes in, but the Team Jackson fighter recovered, getting back to his feet shortly thereafter. The blow bloodied up Sanchez’s mouth and Kampmann continued to pick his shots. All first round takedown attempts by Sanchez were stuffed by his opponent and the two walked to their corners at the end of the opening five minutes with Kampmann up 10-9.

Vitor Belfort is latest challenge for tenacious Anderson Silva

Vitor Belfort is latest challenge for tenacious Anderson Silva - Anderson Silva has four losses in his storied career, so he clearly falls in the first category. The question, though, is whether the reigning UFC middleweight champion will ever be in the second category again.

At UFC 126, Vitor Belfort is latest challenge for tenacious Anderson Silva. To paraphrase legendary football coach Bum Phillips, “There’s two kinds of mixed martial arts fighters: them that’s been beat and them that’s gonna git beat.”

Anderson Silva has four losses in his storied career, so he clearly falls in the first category. The question, though, is whether the reigning UFC middleweight champion will ever be in the second category again. Anderson Silva on his knees.

For 12 consecutive bouts, Silva has either submitted, knocked out or outlasted every opponent UFC President Dana White has thrown against him. This weekend, he faces the man who may be his stiffest challenge yet, former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort.

Their fight tops the card of UFC 126 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas at 10 p.m. Saturday. It should be a great fight, considering the vast amount of experience between the two mixed martial artists, and the respect they have for each other.

Belfort praised Silva for the continual evolution of his skills as a fighter. That growth means studying tape of Silva’s previous fights is a study in futility. As his title defenses indicate, such study has yet to provide an “aha!” moment for any of the 13 opponents who have been seeking for a weakness.

Anderson Silva expects the best Vitor Belfort

Anderson Silva expects the best Vitor Belfort - Anderson Silva insists he is not giving any special attention to Vitor Belfort, despite the challenger’s world class reputation when it comes striking.

Belfort has beaten the likes of Randy Couture, Wanderlei Silva and Rich Franklin during his career, displaying lethal hand speed combined with phenomenal power.

Silva has not faced an out-and-out striker since he met Patrick Cote in October 2008, when the pair shared two rounds of cautious sparring before Cote’s knee gave way.

Belfort’s reputation is far superior to that of Cote, as is his career record, and it is reported that the Brazilian is applying a significant Karate element to his training in order to overcome the UFC middleweight champion.

Watch Silva vs. Belfort Fight

Watch Silva vs. Belfort Fight - Super Saturday has often served as the staging ground for significant fights between high-profile UFC stars. UFC 126 “Silva vs. Belfort” falls in line this Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, as light heavyweight showdowns pairing Rich Franklin with Forrest Griffin and Jon Jones with Ryan Bader serve as the appetizers.

In the main event, two of the most dangerous and dynamic strikers in MMA history will vie for the UFC middleweight crown, as defending champion Anderson Silva puts his title on the line against Vitor Belfort.

Sherdog.com recently caught up with dozens of professional trainers and fighters to gauge their opinions on the long-awaited duel between Silva and Belfort:

Jonathan Chaimberg: I think the matchup is a great one for Silva. It’s one of the first fights for him in a while where he can focus on his creative striking game and not worry about being taken down or out-grappled; that is key. Vitor’s cage rust will also be a factor. Look for fireworks early and Anderson winning early in the second round.
