Birmingham Weather News

Birmingham Weather News - Some very nice pictures from The Seventh Birmingham Colloquium on the Textual Criticism of the New Testament held in Birmingham in March 2011 has been placed on-line at the ITSEE website. You can judge from the third picture how much I enjoyed the atmosphere. One of the highlights was the skype session with Amy Donaldson who presented from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean (pictures in rows 13-14). Pictures from the excursion to Lichfield Cathedral and its treasures are found in rows 8-10 (including the Chad Gospels). Special thanks to photographer Edgar Ebojo.

George Lopez Apologizes For Kirstie Alley Pig - Late night host George Lopez made a joke this week implying that instant Dancing with the Stars favorite Kirstie Alley is a pig. It didn't go over too well.

On Tuesday's Lopez Tonight, he said, “She did a nice job,” after showing a clip of Kirstie and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. “Her little hooves tapping away.”

He then did a play on the classic nursery rhyme, This Little Piggy Goes to Market, before playing a clip of a pig squealing “wheeeee” riding in a car.

Having thought better of it, Lopez apologized last night on Twitter:

Not sure how one misjudges a joke in which one calls a woman a pig - not something they typically take kindly too - but it appears no harm was done.

Alley struck back at Lopez, writing: "lol...a drunk pig...hehe" and later, this:

"Don't worry about George's comments... just remember what happens to the big bad, drunk wolf... falls in a boiling pot of vodka. Piggy laughs."

Good one. This isn't the first such incident for Lopez, who made weight-related cracks about Bristol Palin ballooning on DWTS last season, too.

Government asks Filipinos to leave in Libya

Government asks Filipinos to leave in Libya - The Philippine government will exert last ditch efforts to persuade the remaining Filipinos in Libya to go home, a senior official said Friday. Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said the government "will have to do a little convincing" to repatriate the Filipinos who chose to remain in Libya.

"But we will have to let them know what the situation is, and what the dangers are" in continuing to stay in Libya, Valted said at a briefing.

There are 26,000 Filipinos working and living in Libya. Most of them chose to get repatriated following the increased tension in the Middle Easter country. About 2,000 Filipinos, however, chose to stay behind.

Valte added that the Philippine government is hoping that no Filipinos would be harmed after Libya was declared a no fly-zone due to escalating political tensions.

Tokoto gave North Carolina and Roy Williams the nod, becoming UNC’s second verbal commitment from the junior class.

“I’m going to be a Tar Heel,” Tokoto said in an exclusive interview. “I’m going to North Carolina.”

“We feel like North Carolina is the best fit for my family and I,” he added. “The coaching staff is all great guys. I like the team. I like the history and the education I can get at North Carolina. It’s the total package. It’s all there.”

Throughout the recruiting process, Tokoto, a standout at Menomonee (Wisc.) Falls entertained interest and offers from a huge number of schools nationwide. His eight finalists were Connecticut, Marquette, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, UCLA and Wisconsin – however other offering schools included Duke, Indiana, Michigan State, Tennessee and Texas.

But Tokoto said UNC’s welcoming approach stood out.

“It was definitely their hospitality and how they great they treated everybody down there,” Tokoto said. “Everybody was happy and very nice. That definitely caught my attention. The campus is beautiful.

Tonya Harding is Olympic skating champion - Former Olympic skating champion Tonya Harding is expecting her first child with husband Joseph Price. The two are expecting a baby boy.

Tonya Harding's reputation plummeted when her ex-husband conspired to attack Tonya's skating competitor Nancy Kerrigan at a practice session during the 1994 US Figure Skating Championships. After an investigation into the assault, in which Ms Kerrigan was clubbed in the knee, Harding received three years' probation, 500 hours of community service and a $160,000 fine. As part of the plea bargain, she was also forced to withdraw from the championships.

Since then Tonya Harding became a regular commentator on truTV's 'The Smoking Gun Presents: World's Dumbest".

Box Score of Duke Vs UNC - Duke’s most hated rival was running the Blue Devils off their notorious home court, so Mike Krzyzewski gathered them around at halftime and gave them a locker-room speech.

Nolan Smith scored 22 of his career-high 34 points after halftime, Seth Curry finished with a season-high 22 and No. 5 Duke rallied from 16 points down to beat No. 20 North Carolina 79-73 on Wednesday night.

The Blue Devils (22-2, 9-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed 43-27 in the final minute of the first half and were down 14 at halftime before clamping down on the Tar Heels, outscoring them 50-30 in the final 20 minutes to match the second-best halftime rally in school history and keep hold of first place in the league.

It is impossible not to find amazing to love about this video. McEntee's clear complacency is completely delightful, and the elaborate relaxed attitude with which his teammates make cameos is a total hoot. For our money, the best shots are the William Tell (the kid he's throwing at doesn't even flinch, which tells you a lot about how often he misses), the mid-air attack on the Domino's delivery guy, the ball-out-the-air field goal, and the seated basketball shots. Oh, and McEntee's victory dance. Don't miss that.

Bonus trivia: According to sources in our UConn community, McEntee used to date Lady Huskies basketballer Caroline Doty, no stranger herself to trick shots. What're they putting in the water up in Storrs?

UConn football backup quarterback Johnny McEntee made his own trick shot video, showing off his hard to believe accuracy. The sophomore hits targets from long range. He hits targets with a blindfold on. He even uses a football to open doors for his teammates.

Lollapalooza 2011 ozzfest

Lollapalooza 2011 ozzfest - Lollapalooza 2011 is months away, but rumors are already floating around about the lineup.

Though the official Lollapalooza lineup won't be released until April, Greg Kot of the Chicago Tribune and Festival-Outlook have announced some rumored performers.

The festival will be in Grant Park August 5 through 7. There's no word yet on when tickets will go on sale.

Dwaine Caraway Mayor of Dallas

Dwaine Caraway Mayor of Dallas - The mayor of Dallas says he did not sanction giving a quarter of the Philadelphia Eagles Michael Vick a “Key to the City.” Vick has won The Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year last season, his second in the NFL since his post 18 months in prison for running a dogfighting operation. Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway featured on the button during a ceremony in Dallas last week.

In a statement released Monday, Mayor Tom Leppert his distance from the donation. “The measures taken have not been sanctioned by my office and was not an honor ceremony on behalf of the City of Dallas,” he said.

He said the mayor presents “key official of the city” or an elected official appointed by the mayor and is reserved for “an elected official international status.”

“Clearly, this was not the case in this situation and without my knowledge or approval,” he said.

Olivia Wilde and Tao Ruspoli have separated - The House star has separated from Tao Ruspoli, her husband of eight years, sources confirm to People.

"They have been living apart after trying for quite some time to make their relationship work," an insider reports.

Wilde and Ruspoli, an Italian prince, eloped when the actress was only 18 years old.

Mark Zuckerberg is Pradeep Manukonda

Mark Zuckerberg is Pradeep Manukonda - Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has a stalker. The situation got so intense that Zuck went to a judge to request a restraining order against 31-year-old Pradeep Manukonda.

A formal hearing is scheduled for February 22 at Santa Clara County courthouse. The legal filing alleges that the man tried to “follow, surveil and contact Mr. Zuckerberg using language threatening his personal safety.”

Barry Schnitt, a director at Facebook said: “We’re confirming that the restraining order was granted, but not providing any additional details.”

Pradeep has appeared several times at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, reportedly asking for money. He also showed up at Zuckerberg’s home on January 24 and was turned away by security personnel just as he was about to walk up the front steps of the residence.

Despite verbal warnings, Manukonda continued to badger the CEO, sending flowers and a message to Zuckerberg’s sister with an additional message to her brother that included the line: “I am ready to die for you. These are not just words … these are coming from my heart. Please understand my pain.”

J. Paul "Aileen" Getty Balthazar III Dies

J. Paul "Aileen" Getty Balthazar III Dies - J. Paul Getty III Dies at 54 and born into one of the world's richest oil families, was a kidnap victim at 16. J. Paul Getty III grandson of American oil magnate J. Paul Getty, died Saturday in Buckinghamshire, England, at the age of 54. In 1973, Getty was abducted by the mafia, from a piazza in Rome. When his grandfather refused to send the requested ransom, Getty's kidnappers severed his right ear. He was released after four months in captivity. Perhaps the most disturbing part of the story: Getty's grandfather eventually ponied up a portion of the ransom and charged his son — J. Paul Getty II — interest for the remainder of the ransom.

A decade after the kidnapping, Getty fell into drugs and alcohol addiction, and suffered an incapacitating drug-induced stroke. His died Saturday after a long illness, and is survived by his two children, one of whom is actor Balthazar Getty.

For 12 consecutive bouts, Silva has either submitted, knocked out or outlasted every opponent UFC President Dana White has thrown against him. This weekend, he faces the man who may be his stiffest challenge yet, former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort.

Their fight tops the card of UFC 126 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas at 10 p.m. Saturday. It should be a great fight, considering the vast amount of experience between the two mixed martial artists, and the respect they have for each other.

Belfort praised Silva for the continual evolution of his skills as a fighter. That growth means studying tape of Silva’s previous fights is a study in futility. As his title defenses indicate, such study has yet to provide an “aha!” moment for any of the 13 opponents who have been seeking for a weakness.
